Geylang - Love Hotels and Narrow Walkways

Sorry for a lack of updates in the past few weeks. I have been busy with launching my Kickstarter project for Wongamania: Banana Economy that I barely have time to eat or sleep! My backlog is so huge that my runs from Japan has not been documented on the blog yet! I will get around it as soon as my life becomes less hectic!

Geylang River. Northern route

This Sunday, we headed to City Hall MRT, thinking to gate crash on the Jubilee Walk. Upon reaching Swiss Hotel, we realized that the Vertical Marathon is in full swing at the hotel. Figuring that our usual breakfast spots will be swamped with participants from both events, we decided to shift our running destination to the New Airport Road Food Center where the food is good and the crowd is thinner. We had tried the route south of Geylang River leading to Stadium and decided to try explore the northern side of the river.

Pocari Sweat Run 2015 - Running with Upset Stomach is Not Fun!

by Big Boned Guy.

I woke up at 5 am in the morning, still a little bit groggy after a late night out drinking with PES E and Alcholic, guzzling beer and whiskey. In order to purge the harmful effects of the alcohol to prepare for the Pocari Sweat 10km run the next morning, I downed one litre of water when I got home and promptly went to bed at 12:30 am. Lazy girl was the first (surprise, surprise) to greet us in the morning at 4:59 am in our Whatsapp chat group. She was taking the chartered bus to the start point and didn’t want to miss it while Fang Tai made her way to the Sports hub via the first train. We were all taking part in the 10 km run so we had to be at the start point by 6:30 am. For Lazy Girl, doing a 10km run is considered as an epic achievement, because she barely survived the Pocari Sweat 5km run a year ago. Meanwhile, PES E was downgraded to the 5KM run due to his knee injury.

I replied “Morning” and proceeded to the bathroom for my morning routine. However, there was a queasy feeling in my stomach and so I sat on the throne for a couple of minutes, tried hard, but achieved nothing for all that effort. I took a quick shower, put on my running gear and left home. When I reached the MRT station, I realised that I was too early for the first train, and so I sat down to wait for another 20 mins on the deserted platform, unwilling to fork our $20 bucks for a cab ride down to the Sports Hub. Meanwhile, Lazy Girl and Fang Tai messaged that they were already at the start point.

I am going to be soooo late for the run...

The only consolation was that I noticed more and more runners clad in Pocari Sweat blue, started to gather on the MRT platform. At least there would be a bunch of other runners who would be as late as I. When the first train finally arrived, more than half the passengers were runners and I plonked myself on a seat and tried to catch more sleep. When the train finally arrived at Stadium MRT station, it was already 6:26 am, leaving only 4 minutes for me to dash to the starting point

My stomach was still not feeling well. Was it the deadly mixture of hamburger, beer and whiskey the night before? As I followed the stream of blue past the underpass and towards the start point, I contemplated going to the toilet first. However, I could not spot any nearby ones at the Kallang Practice Track.

“Heck it, just run first and if it gets unbearable just run to the nearest toilet.” I said to myself.

I started my run around 12 mins after the initial wave was flagged off,  and so there was already a sea of blue in front of me, taking their own sweet time, probably planning to stroll for the entire 10KM.

I sped up and overtook the walkers ahead.

As I neared the 1 km mark, I saw mobile toilets set up along the route with short queues and was tempted to join the queues. However, since the uneasy feeling was still bearable, I shouldered on.

The route took us through the Nicoll Highway, Singapore Flyer, Helix Bridge, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage and back to the Kallang Practice Track via Bay East Garden. As I got into my “running rhythm”, the desire to interrupt my run and visit the loo started to abate. After all, the faster I finished my run, the faster I could relieve myself.

But something unexpected disrupted my plans…

While running along the jogging path at Bay East Garden, my Nike+ app dutifully informed me that I had covered 9 km with 1 km to go. However, I knew that there was still quite a distance to the finish point which was also at the Kallang Practice Track. Could they have shifted the finish point? I got my answer 1 km later. The 10 km marker was placed at the bridge leading towards Singapore Indoor Stadium with no signs of the finishing point anywhere and I was made to run another 1.5 km, with the contents of my last night's debauchery threatening to burst open.

I was cursing under my breath as I willed myself to finish the last 1.5 km around the Singapore Sports Hub and to the finish line with a good timing of 1:08:24, which was quite an accomplishment considering the suffering that I was undergoing during the run.

After collecting the finisher tee and medal, I proceeded to drink copious amount of Pocari Sweat since I heard that isotonic drink is a good treatment for an upset stomache. PES E, who started at 7 am for the 5 km run, came back first, followed by Fang Tai and Lazy Girl. All commented that it was a relatively good run, except for the summer heat and the extra distance.

As I grabbed another cup of Pocari Sweat before heading for breakfast, PES E warned that I’ll “Lao Sai” (Hokkien word for diarrhea)  for drinking so much Pocari Sweat on an upset stomach…

And he was right....

Bounce! AMPed Trampoline Park at Tanjong Katong

Kids heaven!
21 Dec 2014

I heard about the existence of trampoline parks from many of my friends with young kids on both sides of the causeway.

"It is simply the best place to bring kids to over a weekend!" gushed one of my lady friend over at Kuala Lumpur, "They just hop around for 1 hour and they will be absolutely too tired to do anything for the rest of the day!"

Geylang River - The Gateway into Marina Bay (Highly Recommended)

Geylang River from Dakota MRT
It has been exactly 3 years since I started SG Unfit Runners and we are running into one of the biggest challenge of our blog: Finding an area in the central area which we have not covered yet and is acceptable by all the Unfit Runners who live all over Singapore. We spend sometime huddling over Google Map, enlarging the map, looking out for pathways or possible running routes which we can share with our readers. Working from the Marina Bay area, we spied a small walking track from Marina Bay East up along Geylang River. That route looks like a possible runner's dream with minimal traffic crossings. On top of that, one of the best food market in Singapore, Old Airport Road Market is along the way.

Singapore Sports Hub - The Old Dame transformed into a Curvey Lady (1km)

Singapore Sports Hub and the Singapore Indoor stadium
I have many memories of the old Kallang National Stadium and attending the National Day Parade, belting out classical Singapore National Day Songs like "Stand Up for Singapore", "We are Singapore", "One People, One Nation, One Singapore" and my personal favorite, "Count on me Singapore".

Bedok Reservoir Night Run - Recovery Run 2

When it rains, it pours...

And it has been raining literally non stop for the past 2 days. Seems like heavens have been storing a lot of rain water over the last 2 months of drought in Singapore.

The rain finally let up this evening and I took the opportunity to go for a short run.

Since my last run 5 days ago, I was having quite a bad muscle ache at my calf muscles and the ache has mostly gone away today. A short 2km run and I am having such a terrible muscle ache. Looks like the road to recovery going to be a long one....

Reminding myself to take it slow, I decide to do a slow jog of 2km to build up my muscles again. I am also concern about the condition of my knee, which might act up again.

Miraculously, my knee doesn't hurt at the end of the 2km run. Good sign!

I saw a new installation where the old Berlin Wall used to be . Initially, I thought it was a piece of advertising for one of the many condominium projects that are sprouting all around the reservoir. On a close look, it is actually a form of marketing material for the new Eco project being implemented at the nearby Temasek Polytechnic. They even have shops and outlet marketing environmental friendly goods. I wondered if Temasek Poly paid the government any money to market their Eco Project at such a strategic spot. In any case, this is better than a piece of empty glass exhibit with only bugs trying to build a nest within it.

The nearby bistro Wawawa is having a pretty decent crowd, with diners digging in, while enjoying the evening breeze. This is definitely a good place to chill out in the evening, but not a good place to hunt for a drink after a run. Based on my last experience, it is either expensive booze, or expensive soft drinks and sparkling water. I don't blame them as they do need to pay for their rental.

Bedok Reservoir Night Run - First Post Surgery Run

Night at Bedok Reservoir. Doesn't look Hazy
It has been 2 months since my last run.

I have been wanting to stretch my legs for the past few days but lo and behold, the haze from Indonesia started their assault on Singapore. This evening, the air seems to be fresher without the usual burning smell. I decide to risk a run.

As I was heading out, my mum yelled at me, "The PSI is 84! Where are you going?!?"

"Mum, out for a run. No worries."

"The PSI is higher today than yesterday! Yesterday is only at 64!"

"But the air smells okie. Besides, I need to work out a bit!"

Without waiting for any more protest from my overly concern mother, I dashed out of the door.

Well, the air smells alright and the sky looks clear!

Post Haze Run. Stadium to Bay East

The Marketing Poster for G-Dragon
7am. Just Outside Kallang Indoor Stadium.. We saw a long queue just outside the stairways to Kallang In-door Stadium. I thought people were queuing for some Hello Kitty Toy or N95 Mask again. Turns out, that there is a G-Dragon concert later in the evening. But seriously? Queuing at 7am in the morning in sunny tropical Singapore just for a concert!!??

Kallang Waterfront - 5 Reasons Why Every Runners Should Pay Kallang a Visit

Kallang Waterfront with the Sun peeking past the horizon
The last time I ran at Kallang Stadium, was an accidental 10KM run which I was not prepared to run. I did not pay much attention to my surroundings because I was busy trying to figure out how to navigate my way back to Suntec City. I was dying from exhaustion too as the furthest I have ran ever was 6km. This time round, I proposed to the Unfit Runners try out the route from National Stadium to Garden By the Bay East.

100-plus PAssion run at ECP - Bright Orange Shirts Give People a BadHeadache!

The Jigsaw finishing pic! One of the most memorable race gift I ever gotten!
The 100plus Passion run probably marks the first official 9km run I am embarking on. I had done a few 6-8km runs and an accidental 10km run and that's it. I know that I can probably complete the run, but a bout of flu made me decide to forgo my runs for the past 2 weeks. I did a remedial run of 4km a few days before but I wondered if that is really enough for me to complete the historical 9km run.

Bedok PCN to East Coast Park ECP - Canal, Dogs, Hi Sister!

This post came real late because I was busy with work before my Hong Kong trip. I was too busy in Hong Kong as a tour guide for my guys and too tired after too many late nights visiting casinos, street markets and nightspots. Stay tune for my posts on my runs in Macau and Hong Kong. But before that, my long overdue post of my run done 2 weeks ago.

Weekend came, and I was down with flu... So I guess I have no choice but to skip my weekly weekend run. In its place, I decided to do a make-up run near my place. I was aiming for a 7-8km run and 2 rounds around my normal Bedok Reservoir Road was not appealing to me. Running eastwards to Tampines was simply not appealing after my ordeal last week. So I decided to run South and visit my sister's place at Tanah Merah to see how far is it exactly.
Conserve Water and Save the Turtles!?!

So I started off at the Bedok Reservoir Park connector network (PCN) and headed towards the Bedok PCN towards the south, along a nice long canal that discharge water from Bedok Reservoir into the ocean at East Coast Park (ECP).

Bedok Tampines PCN - Too Many Pace Disruptive Traffic Junctions!

The initial plan was to conduct our weekly run at the western end of Singapore: The Chinese Garden. However, all the westerners who were championing for that location pulled out on Friday, probably due to too much excessive National Day celebration. So the choice of where to run fell to BBG and me. We decided to do our individual location runs this Saturday. Since the need to commit to a certain timing had been eliminated from the equation, I had a late night on Friday and promptly woke up later than usual on Saturday. That was the first mistake!
Objective: Bedok to Pasir Ris!

East Coast Parkway: It Is As Good As It Can Get

After the grueling hilly terrain of MacRitchie Reservoir, we decided to settle for something less demanding, preferably flat and has potentially lots of pretty ladies. We settled on the evergreen running spot of Singapore. East Coast Park!

If you take a look at all the past post, this is the first time we are doing a run in the east as a group. The reason why: Most of the unfit runners stay in the north and west and I am the only easterner around. It is sad given that the east side has some of the best running spots around. Feeling guilty, the guys let me have my way at the end of the day...

We arranged to meet at Eunos MRT and I will pick them up from there. While waiting in the car at the nearby coffeeshop, I messaged the guys:

PES E, " Come to the back of the MRT. There is a coffeeshop there. I am at the carpark there."

Lazy Girl, "Turn North. Make sure the sun is on your right."

BBG, "Turn Right, see Mr Bean, turn Right, turn right again to carpark."

Lazy Girl, "  <Scream>. I need a compass!"

PES E, "Look for the sun!"

She found her way via the Mr Bean Method... Anyway....

In case you spot a swimmer drowning in polluted water..

Garden By the Bay East, Kallang, Nicoll Highway - A Big Mistake! 10 KMRun

One week after the Pocari Sweat run, we finally decided to sign up for the Stanchart Half Marathon 10km run and set or minds to training for it.

BBG,"Stanchart 10km no more liao"

PES E,"WTF!?? Let's do the 750m kids dash...."

BBG, "Ya. I just checked. Only marathon n kids dash left.."

Fang Tai, "Think GE Women run still have. Who wanna bring my kids for the run?"

PES E," Noooooooo. My Stanchart!! I never did a Stanchart run before!! I need to do a Stanchart run before I die!!!?

Marathon Girl, " OMG. This is really fast. Really gained a lot of popularity thru the years. Actually got a lot of other runs... Standard chartered too crowded...  越来越不好跑

BBG, "Any good ones u recommend for end of year?"

Marathon Girl, "100 plus passion run in Nov. Got 9km distance."

PES E," We going for all the Isotonic drinks run?? Got a H2O run???"

The discussion to replace the Stanchart Half Marathon is still on going....

Bedok Reservoir Forefoot Run Practise - Guess the no of CuddlingCouples?

Now that my calves were 80% recovered, I decided to go for another practice run using forefoot run. This time, I do my normal Bedok Reservoir running route minimizing the heroism of exploring new routes and taking photos at the same time. Did forefoot run for 3 km before feeling the strain on the calves again. Back to heel running for the rest of the distance. My pace did jumped below 7min/km in the first 2 km and I barely felt any breathlessness after the 4.4km run. This is an interesting running technique. More practices to come.

My poor poor calf...
Counted: 5 couples eating each others' face. 1 man talking to his dog by the moonlight waters.

Bedok PCN - Exploring, Fore Foot Running, PAIN!

Bedok Park Connector Network is part of the legendary Eastern Region PCN that connects the entire eastern part of Singapore. Bedok Reservoir Park is centrally located in this PCN connecting Pasir Ris to East Coast Park. My runs are generally focused around the Reservoir and I haven't started exploring the surround areas yet so I thought that it was time to try as my stamina was getting better.
Welcome to Bedok Park Connector!

My best buddy who got hang of my recent running efforts, sent me this video to encourage me to try out a new running method: forefoot running.

Bedok Reservoir Park - The Ghastly Night Run

The blog will not be completed without my regular haunting spot, Bedok Reservoir Park. This is the place that I got embarrassed, made my resolution to get fit and my training spot that I got some of my fitness back. I tend to do night runs after work and sometimes, even past midnight!! This is unthinkable for many of my friends as there were 6 suicides over a span of past year at the reservoir. The ghosts that are probably haunting the "the most haunted spot" of Singapore includes a mum in red who committed suicide with her toddler son, an Indian construction worker, an old lady and the lower half of a chinese male.

The Haunted Bedok Reservoir?

The reservoir itself is 4.3km with the official starting point at the WAWAWA bistro and most runners start in an anti-clockwise direction. The track is very runner friendly with distance markers every 500m. The track is actually quite brightly lighted with a lamp post every 50m away. The scariest "thing" I encountered is a couple sitting by the slope of the reservoir cuddling together probably doing interesting things to each other.
