SG Unfit Runners Pokemon Hunt: Botanical Gardens

Having a good share of Peking Ducks (Psyduck) and Sashimi (Magikarp) for our Pokemon Hunt at Marina Bay last week, we examined the Singapore map more unexplored places whereby rare Pokemon will pop up. We had two clues based on the articles we have read so far on where to find potential rare Pokemons:

1) Rare Pokemons are often found in Parks

2) Rare Pokemons are often found in places of high historical importance.

The place that immediately popped into our minds is the newly crowned and Singapore only UNESCO World Heritage site, Singapore Botanical Gardens.

We read that that is a huge number of Pokestops and Gyms within the garden compound which makes the probability of the appearance of a rare Pokemon ever more probable. Motivated by the chance to discover a new Pokemon paradise, we decided to switch from our usual weekly Marina Bay running routine to a part of Singapore where we haven't visited in months.

Ah, the beauty of Pokemon Go! Bringing you to explore new places.. again...
Gathering at the Botanical Gardens Mrt, we were greeted by a Gym guarded by a fierce looking Gyarados and caught a Voltorb while doing our stretching and warm up exercise. We are getting real excited here! Previously Voltorb also appeared in Changi village and ECP which both have a large variety of rare Pokemons. With our hopes high and poke balls lock and loaded, we charged into the sweet smelling garden and found...

Voltorb....

And more Voltorbs....

There is a bunch of Psyducks and Magikarps found around the ponds within Botanical Garden and an occasional Squirtle. Other than that, it's just Voltorbs...

Come on! The Universal Studio Singapore boost a Pikachu nest and Botanical Gardens should deserve better! Singapore Tourism Board should write to Niantic to put an Omanyte nest in there!

On the other hand, Botanical Garden is full of Pokestops (50-100??) and 8 Pokegyms and one loop around the Botanical Garden is roughly around 5km. So if you are looking to replenish your Pokeballs and hatch some 5km eggs, Botanical Garden is an ideal place to check out on your journey towards a Pokemon Master!

Pokemons: Slowpoke, Rhyhorn, Magikarp, Psyduck, Nidoran, Clefairy
Prize catch: 12 Voltorbs

Lower Peirce Reservoir - Trails, Stairs and a Traffic Free Road (2.5km) (9km)

Beautiful cool morning at Lower Peirce Reservoir
The start of 2015 started with a Bang! A gunshot that heralds legions of work held back by the chains of the year end festival. It has been non-stop working week-days to week-ends for the first 2 weeks. The 3rd week of Jan me saw me down with a severe cold, thanks to over exhaustion and my running stamina is totally busted by a week of bed rest.

Bright Hill Monastery (光明山普觉禅寺) - A Run to the Most Important Buddhist Temple of Singapore (5KM)

When Big Bone Guy (BBG) suggested running around the housing estates of Upper Thomson and Marymount Road, I was expecting the usual boring private housing, condo and public housing (HDB) landscape that makes up the majority of the housing estate in Singapore. He sparked my curiosity when he mentioned the Bright Hill Monastery or better known as 光明山 among the Buddhists in Singapore.

Singapore Botanical Gardens & Farrer Road - Nice Route with Minimal Traffic Junctions (5KM)

One of my favorite running shots I have ever taken.
I shall name this "Dabaoing Breakfast on Sat Morning"
Apparently, we are running out of centralized locations which the Westerners are willing to travel to on an early Saturday morning.

"Well, there is the largely unexplored East side your know. Pasir Ris, Changi Beach, Bedok Reservoir Park?"

Bishan Park - Revisiting the "Most" Central Park in Singapore (3KM)

A very Big Sign just in case you didn't realize that it is a park
This week, we returned to bishan park, the running playground of big bone guy. To add to the prestige of this event, alcoholic came to join us!! He has been missing in action for the past few months because he claims that he can't wake up so early on a sat morning and is more of a night bird than morning bird. He dropped by this morning because the park is near enough to his home that he was able to just roll off his bed, and stroll over to the park.

Macritchie East Side Run - Tight, Narrow, Slippery with Steps

The narrow paths of Macritchie Reservoir
This week, we were back to challenge Macritchie Reservoir after the ill fated run a few months ago. This time round, we were more cautious, just in case Lazy Girl wondered off in the woods and ended up on a golf course again. The last time, we tried the clockwise direction towards the West side of the reservoir, so we would be trying the anti-clockwise direction towards the Eastern region of the reservoir.

MacRitchie Reservoir - Hardcore Runners Recommended

We thought we were ready for MacRitchie after so many weeks of running around different parts of Singapore. We were wrong.

Our Startpoint. The Jetty
MacRitchie Reservoir is probably one of the oldest and favorite running spot for Singapore runners and I probably do not need to even blog about it as most runners would have, at one point of time, done a run at MacRitchie Reservoir. The last time we did a run at MacRitchie Reservoir was during our High School days, when we were forced by the school to go for a cross country run.

Singapore Botanical Gardens - A Runner's Labyrinth

This week, we decided to tackle the pride of NParks: Singapore Botanical Gardens. Because of the central location, there were generally no protests from the Westerners. In fact, marathon girl ran from her place at Jurong East to Botanical Gardens! Hubby Crippled Guy took a train down and waited for her at the entrance.. as usual.

Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park - Park in Concrete Forest

This run is the start of the group run as I managed to drag the asses of my lazy friends out for a workout. The idea started as we were chugging beer (I was drinking expensive coke as usual) at a pub along Orchard Road.

PES E Guy (Me),"Hey guys, I have been doing some running recently. Shall we go for a run on weekend?"

Lazy girl,"I bought a new set of running attire and haven't got chance to use it yet!"

Big bone guy (BBG),"To be fair, let's go Bishan park which is in the middle of Singapore and near my house!"

The alcoholic,"Bishan Park just below my flat! Great, lets go!"

BBG,"Lazy girl confirm will fly our kite. She prob won't wake up in time!"

Lazy girl,"I am committed!"

The alcoholic," If you don't turn up, you will treat us to a round of drinks!"

And our dear friend didn't turn up due to work commitment..... We are still waiting for a free round of drinks...

The Starting Point. Mcdonalds

It was a sunny sat morning as we gather at Bishan Park Mcdonalds and the place was already full of families munching on high calories Mcdonald breakfast. After a short warm-up we jogged westwards towards the bigger western segment so that we can get more mileage out of the whole area. We don't intend to cover a long distance as my friends were not that fit at the time and I had a nagging pain on my knee.

To get to western segment, we would need to cross a major road which will disrupt the running momentum and it also gave slow runners like me to catch up since my friends whose pace averaged 6min/km. We were running in a clockwise direction.

The Traffic junction at Marymount Road
The park was a bustling hive of activities that morning. The play area is colorful and interesting to see and I saw quite a number of kids clambering up and down the obstacles. Coincidentally, there was an event "Singapore World Water Day" being celebrated in the park at the Western park area. There were performances, activities and plenty of school kids out in the sun, whom my guess was that they rather stay at home with their computer games. There was a small muddy stream following through the park which I was most unimpressed. I remembered that a "waterfront" park was promised by the prime minister during his election campaign to allow residents of Bishan and AMK to enjoy "waterfront" life style. In my opinion, the word "waterfront" is used too loosely these days... Here is the description I found from NPark:

"One of the highlights of the park is the stretch of Kallang River that used to run in a concrete canal but is now a naturalised, meandering river teeming with life. The result of a joint collaboration between NParks and PUB, under the latter's Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters Programme; this river brings park users closer to the water to enjoy its beauty and serenity, and to appreciate the flora and fauna that flourish in the park because of the waterway."

And I was thinking that the highlight of the park is the McDonald....
Colorful installations along the run route

World Water Day and a bunch of kids blocking the running track
There is a small skating area for kids who want to pick up blading and seems like the kids were having fun falling down. Being an amateur skater myself, the floor looks quite rough for any smooth skating experience, but for the entrepreneurs running the skating lessons, any small patch of empty space is enough to conduct lessons. After-all, they are beginners, you don't expect them to travel for than a few feet without falling on their asses.

Rugged open area for newbie skaters
Towards the end of the run back at Eastern segment of the park, there are quite a number of shops situated within the parks. From what I saw, the commercial buildings are made up of pubs, restaurants and spas. The free parking area is just conveniently in front of these buildings so this will be a pretty friendly spot for car owners to hang out.

The spas, pubs and eateries
A short run back to Mcdonalds will more or less complete the entire 4km circuit but, my right knee was already killing me so i did not complete the last fee hundred meters.

Overall, Bishan AMK is truly what i would call a heartland park. Instead of trees, you are surrounded by tall HDB estates, giving you the feeling of jogging in a concrete valley. There are not many killer kids on wheels and most of the people I met were engaged in serious strolling or running. The running path is by no means a straight path and has numerous curves and twist, so make sure you are not distracted by pretty girls while running, or else you will be running into a ditch or muddy patch. It's hard to maintain an uninterrupted run with the traffic junctions and curved paths for a prolong 10km jog though the shortfall is compensated by the numerous coffee shops around the HDB, making this area a good place to do hang out with friends after a good run.
Accessibility :  Bus 55 from Bus interchange or Bus 13 at bus stop opposite MRT. Can take a short warm up run from Bishan MRT

Parking: 2 small free carparks. Numerous HDB carparks around the park. Free on Sundays

Type of tracks: Asphalt

Elevation: Very Flat
