Osaka - Japan: There is a Surprise at Every Corner!

The Shinsekai District
Date: 15 Sept 2015

Osaka, the food paradise of Japan and the second largest city in Japan. Many tourists spend only few days in Osaka often visiting the usual sites like Osaka Castle, Osaka Aquarium and Universal Studios, before rushing off to visit the nearby cultural cities of Kyoto and Nara. For the Unfit Runners, we are spending a grand total of 5 days at Osaka, intending to visit the sights and sounds that other tourists will usually bypass. Of course, the other objective is to try out all the best gourmet food which Osaka has to offer but that is another story best left to another day and another site, as SG Unfit Runner is after all a running site dedicated to all stuff related to running.

Our Air BnB apartment was conveniently located at the Namba district just beside Den-Den Town.
Den-Den Town is the equivalent of Akihabara of Tokyo and in my opinion, is much less touristy and has much more bargains to be found for those who are into all things geeky.

Further south of Den-Den Town, lies another less visited gem of Osaka, Shinsekai with whole streets of famous eateries including Japan's famous fugu (pufferfish) restaurants. As compared to the extremely famous, touristy and expensive Dontonbori, we can find much better deals here.

In close proximity to Shinsekai are another two interesting sights, the Spa World and Tennoji Zoo. Spa World is pretty interesting as it operates like a Spa amusement park right at the heart of the city. They even have an giant Attack of the Titan Colossal Titan at the top of the building to highlight the steamy aspect of the spa. For those who are unfamiliar with the hit Titan series, the Colossal Titan always makes an appearance accompanied by lots and lots of steam. Over at the horizon, the tallest building in Japan, the Abenobashi Terminal Building looms over the horizon.

The run at Osaka around the Nipponbashi area has been extremely rewarding and interesting. The vehicular traffic during the early morning has been light and there is little trouble running across the traffic junctions around Osaka. There are always something new and interesting to see and I will strongly recommend any visitors to head out on an exploratory run early in the morning, to check out potential eating places and interesting attractions often left out in the tourist guide. There are also many potential running routes around Osaka which I will be keen to explore the next time around. As compared to Tokyo's Shinjuku, which I will touch on in a later post, I prefers the exploratory run around Osaka.

Geylang - Love Hotels and Narrow Walkways

Sorry for a lack of updates in the past few weeks. I have been busy with launching my Kickstarter project for Wongamania: Banana Economy that I barely have time to eat or sleep! My backlog is so huge that my runs from Japan has not been documented on the blog yet! I will get around it as soon as my life becomes less hectic!

Geylang River. Northern route

This Sunday, we headed to City Hall MRT, thinking to gate crash on the Jubilee Walk. Upon reaching Swiss Hotel, we realized that the Vertical Marathon is in full swing at the hotel. Figuring that our usual breakfast spots will be swamped with participants from both events, we decided to shift our running destination to the New Airport Road Food Center where the food is good and the crowd is thinner. We had tried the route south of Geylang River leading to Stadium and decided to try explore the northern side of the river.

Mulheim - Germany: Beautiful Parks and Breathtaking River Trails

Running date: 07/10/2015

It has been a crazy month for the month of October. I barely had any rest coming back from Japan and off I flew off again, for another 2 weeks intensive work trip to Germany at Spiel Essen, the world's largest toys and board game convention to show case Wongamania. Although we escaped from the choking haze, we were met with freezing 0 degrees mornings and a flu virus that attacked everybody during the trip. However, I managed to clock in one run during the earlier part of my trip before it has gotten too cold and us too sick to do any morning runs.

I will like to introduce to you Mulheim, a small city at the north-west of Germany, just north of the fashion capital Dusseldorf.

Japan - Kobe: Lost on Mount Rokko National Park

Once upon a time, there were 3 Unfit Runners who wanted to perform some fat cleansing after feasting on a copious amount of booze, oysters and Kobe beef. Wondering if the holy water of Arima Onsen can cleanse them of their sins, they decided to embark on a journey to the North, via the treacherous slopes of Mt Rokko  via a series of train, bus, ropeway and a cable car with the plan of not walking more than 500 meters during the entire journey.

In preparation of the journey, the heroes decided to gorge themselves silly with Kobe beef, leading to extreme food coma, resulting in them deciding to have a 1 hour Siesta (Afternoon Nap) before venturing into the Holy Lands.

Japan - Hiroshima : Garden City without the Stress of Tokyo

SG Unfit Runners have been planning to go back to Japan ever since our last trip made in 2009, when we did an ambitious whirlwind tour covering 7 cities within 2 weeks. This time round, we were determined to explore more of the underbelly of Japan, covering Hiroshima, Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo, over a period of 17 days. Our first stop: Hiroshima.

Hiroshima is a place which I am sure everybody will be familiar with. It is the city where the first atomic weapon was unleashed on a populated area. A thriving metropolis and port on the western side of Japan, Hiroshima has almost everything that Tokyo has to offer, but with a lot less crowd. There is little jostling or squeezing even during peak hours in the city, well connected local rail and tram network and it has its fair share of local cuisine that made many of my facebook friends drool with envy when I posted pictures of its famous oyster dishes.

Hong Kong - Tin Hau: A Haven for Cafe Lovers

Artisan Cafes in abundant along Electric Road
Run on 16 Aug 2015

Every year, I travels to Hong Kong to catch up with some of my good friends, enjoy the good food, do some outlet shopping and most importantly find new places to explore and run in Hong Kong. During the past few trips, I have always stayed around food haven of Hong Kong, Mong Kok (旺角). This time round, due to my busy schedule developing the new Wongamania edition, Bad Bear did most of the leg work in planning the trip. He chose an extremely nice boutique hotel Victoria Somerset Hotel at Tin Hau (天后) which is nearby to Causeway Bay. Tin Hau is a residential estate with a good mix of commercial and residential buildings. One interesting tidbit which we heard from our Hong Kong friends is that the area is well known to be haunted, especially the residential areas. Personally, I think that this is a pretty nice area, much like Tiong Bahru in Singapore with quite a number of chillax cafes, pubs, eateries and desert shop all around the area. This place comes alive during weekend evenings when the residents hang around their favorite watering hole and chit chat till late night.

Reebok Spartan Race - Not for you if you are Unfit (Freebies Alert!)

I was recently approached by the organizers of Reebok Spartan Race to give a shout out for their event.

Now I know why it is called the Spartan Race. You literally have to run through fire, crawl through mud, throw a spear and charge half naked into the welcoming arms of King Xerxes

Photo Diary - SG50 National Day Run

It has been raining hard for the past 3 days and the skies cleared on the morning of 9th August 2015. The day is the 50th Jubilee birthday of the miracle city state Singapore and SG Unfit Runners decided to pay a visit to Marina Bay, where all the action will be later during the evening. We celebrated the nation birthday using different ways. I decided to take photos around the Bay area while Big Boned Guy tried to trace the number "50" on his Nike run app. Fang Tai ran down Orchard Road (I don't see how that's symbolic but it is probably a girl thing) while Lazy Girl overslept and turned up for Breakfast-After-The-Run.

It's 730am in the morning and there is already a crowd at the normally deserted Merlion Park

Photo Diary - National Day Preparation @ Marina Bay

We are getting really lazy these days in looking for new areas to run and we have settled down to a comfortable routine of going back to Marina Bay area every week. So I am going to start a new section on SG Unfit Runners called Photo Diary, whereby we will present to you some of the interesting sights and scenes while running around the same old places.

This week, we will share with our readers some of the SG50 National Day Parade' set-up around the bay area. Enjoy!

A Countdown of 1 to 50 around the Bay Area.

Why number 20? Because No 18 got a bunch of people resting underneath. So
took photo with 20 instead

SG Unfit Runners Top 10 Most Popular Blog? We are not that Popular!

During the Singapore Blog Awards at F Club on 23rd July, I was busy munching a plate of bee hoon, sipping hot tea and chatting with Budget Babe and waiting for the awards for the top 10 most popular blogs to be dished out.

"The next winner of the top 10 most popular blog goes to.... SG UNFIT RUNNERS!!"

I literally choked on my tea....

There was a stunned silence among my group while the emcee kept on announcing, "Where is the representative for SG Unfit Runners? Yahoo! Where are you?"

We did not expect to win a popular blog award being a relatively unknown blog writing on a relatively unknown topic.

Singapore Stanchart Marathon - 3rd Time a Charm?

by PES E

I must admit that I am jinxed, when it comes to Stanchart Marathon. I had to sit out the last two Stanchart Marathons for the past 2 years...

When we first started out as Unfit Runners 3 years ago, we aimed to participate in the most prestigious marathon in Singapore which is the Stanchart Marathon. At that point of time, the thought of covering the minimal distance of 10km was inconceivable for all of us. We could barely cover 3km, not to mention a mission impossible 10km run (10km is an achievement for all the Unfit people!).  Slowly, over the years, we aimed to take part in 5km runs, and it has been only recently that during the Pocari Sweat run in July, all the regular members of SG Unfit Runners managed to complete a 10km run. I have achieved the 10km benchmark 2 years ago, but a knee injury took me down to a feeble 1km and the slow recovery continues to plague me till today. During 2013 and 2014, I signed up for the Stanchart Marathon run but did not attempt them as my knee injury took an awfully long time to heal. At this moment of time, I can probably cover 6-7km before my knee starts to act up and this year, I am optimistically hopeful that I did not sign up in vain... again...

Pocari Sweat Run 2015 - Running with Upset Stomach is Not Fun!

by Big Boned Guy.

I woke up at 5 am in the morning, still a little bit groggy after a late night out drinking with PES E and Alcholic, guzzling beer and whiskey. In order to purge the harmful effects of the alcohol to prepare for the Pocari Sweat 10km run the next morning, I downed one litre of water when I got home and promptly went to bed at 12:30 am. Lazy girl was the first (surprise, surprise) to greet us in the morning at 4:59 am in our Whatsapp chat group. She was taking the chartered bus to the start point and didn’t want to miss it while Fang Tai made her way to the Sports hub via the first train. We were all taking part in the 10 km run so we had to be at the start point by 6:30 am. For Lazy Girl, doing a 10km run is considered as an epic achievement, because she barely survived the Pocari Sweat 5km run a year ago. Meanwhile, PES E was downgraded to the 5KM run due to his knee injury.

I replied “Morning” and proceeded to the bathroom for my morning routine. However, there was a queasy feeling in my stomach and so I sat on the throne for a couple of minutes, tried hard, but achieved nothing for all that effort. I took a quick shower, put on my running gear and left home. When I reached the MRT station, I realised that I was too early for the first train, and so I sat down to wait for another 20 mins on the deserted platform, unwilling to fork our $20 bucks for a cab ride down to the Sports Hub. Meanwhile, Lazy Girl and Fang Tai messaged that they were already at the start point.

I am going to be soooo late for the run...

The only consolation was that I noticed more and more runners clad in Pocari Sweat blue, started to gather on the MRT platform. At least there would be a bunch of other runners who would be as late as I. When the first train finally arrived, more than half the passengers were runners and I plonked myself on a seat and tried to catch more sleep. When the train finally arrived at Stadium MRT station, it was already 6:26 am, leaving only 4 minutes for me to dash to the starting point

My stomach was still not feeling well. Was it the deadly mixture of hamburger, beer and whiskey the night before? As I followed the stream of blue past the underpass and towards the start point, I contemplated going to the toilet first. However, I could not spot any nearby ones at the Kallang Practice Track.

“Heck it, just run first and if it gets unbearable just run to the nearest toilet.” I said to myself.

I started my run around 12 mins after the initial wave was flagged off,  and so there was already a sea of blue in front of me, taking their own sweet time, probably planning to stroll for the entire 10KM.

I sped up and overtook the walkers ahead.

As I neared the 1 km mark, I saw mobile toilets set up along the route with short queues and was tempted to join the queues. However, since the uneasy feeling was still bearable, I shouldered on.

The route took us through the Nicoll Highway, Singapore Flyer, Helix Bridge, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage and back to the Kallang Practice Track via Bay East Garden. As I got into my “running rhythm”, the desire to interrupt my run and visit the loo started to abate. After all, the faster I finished my run, the faster I could relieve myself.

But something unexpected disrupted my plans…

While running along the jogging path at Bay East Garden, my Nike+ app dutifully informed me that I had covered 9 km with 1 km to go. However, I knew that there was still quite a distance to the finish point which was also at the Kallang Practice Track. Could they have shifted the finish point? I got my answer 1 km later. The 10 km marker was placed at the bridge leading towards Singapore Indoor Stadium with no signs of the finishing point anywhere and I was made to run another 1.5 km, with the contents of my last night's debauchery threatening to burst open.

I was cursing under my breath as I willed myself to finish the last 1.5 km around the Singapore Sports Hub and to the finish line with a good timing of 1:08:24, which was quite an accomplishment considering the suffering that I was undergoing during the run.

After collecting the finisher tee and medal, I proceeded to drink copious amount of Pocari Sweat since I heard that isotonic drink is a good treatment for an upset stomache. PES E, who started at 7 am for the 5 km run, came back first, followed by Fang Tai and Lazy Girl. All commented that it was a relatively good run, except for the summer heat and the extra distance.

As I grabbed another cup of Pocari Sweat before heading for breakfast, PES E warned that I’ll “Lao Sai” (Hokkien word for diarrhea)  for drinking so much Pocari Sweat on an upset stomach…

And he was right....

3 Tips to Increase your Chances of Getting into the Finals of Singapore Blog Awards

Honestly speaking, I have not heard of the Singapore Blog Awards until April 2014, when I came across Grace Tan (workingwithgrace.wordpress.com) blogging course, looking for ideas to improve on my running blog (sgunfitrunners.blogspot.com). I noticed that she had a couple of Singapore Blog Awards banner on the site of the blog and that is how I came to know about the Blog Awards. I registered my blog on a whim and was incredulous that my blog actually got into the finals of the Topical Category of the Blog Awards. My blog even got a honorable mention by the guest of honor, Senior Minister of State, Dr Amy Khor.

Bizad Charity Run 2015

Run date: 10th Jan 2015

I have not participated in any paid runs, ever since my Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) injuries 2 years ago. I have some what recovered since than to be able to run 5-6km without much pain to my outer knee. I decided to try out a 5km Charity run organized by NUS Business School to test out the recovery of my knee.

I should have picked a easier run.

Why Marina Bay is a Great Place to Run in the Evening

Skyline of the Singapore's CBD

Running Date: 10th May 2015

The usual crew of SG Unfit Runners have been logging in runs on weekend early mornings when the crowd is thin and the breakfast is fragrant. Our lone night crew, Bad Bear, sprained his ankle during one of his in-line skating venture and after resting for 3 months, felt that he had to get back to a healthy lifestyle after being dormant (and getting fat) for so long. Looking for an inspirational run to kickstart his running habit again, he seek me for advice on where is a good place to run.

ONE Championship: Encounter with the Mixed Martial Arts Exponent!

The ONE Championship Belt
Recently, SGUnfit Runners was invited to the Media Launch of the Asia's biggeest Mix Martial Art (MMA) Competition  ONE Championship and we decided to invite our guest writer, Slacker along. Slacker is a certified Senior Instructor for IFMA (International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur) & AMAS (Amateur Muay Thai Association (Singapore)) and started his fighting journey with Muay Thai more than a decade ago!  He had also dabbled in various other arts like Capoeira, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before settling for MMA. Bringing along for the ONE Championship launch seems like the perfect idea!

Bounce! AMPed Trampoline Park at Tanjong Katong

Kids heaven!
21 Dec 2014

I heard about the existence of trampoline parks from many of my friends with young kids on both sides of the causeway.

"It is simply the best place to bring kids to over a weekend!" gushed one of my lady friend over at Kuala Lumpur, "They just hop around for 1 hour and they will be absolutely too tired to do anything for the rest of the day!"

5 Tips to Take Beautiful Pictures while Running

I have never been a fan of running in a gym on a treadmill. Why will you want to stare at the same landscape (or a video drama) for a hour or so, when there are tons of beautiful places around the world to experience and enjoy while out on the streets?

One of the key differentiating factor between SG Unfit Runners and other running blogs is the sheer number of pictures taken along the running route, to help runners have a better idea the kind of landscape that they will encounter during the run. I have often been asked how I take such beautiful pictures of Singapore while running.

Rochor Canal - Great place for an evening romantic stroll

Rochor Canal. Behind ICA Building
Running Date: 08/03/2015

"Transformed Rochor canal a hit with resident" screams the headlines on straits times. It was practically an open invitation for SG Unfit Runners to swing by the canal to check it out. So on that very Sunday, we gathered at Lavender MRT station and easily found a dolled up Rochor canal, just behind the immigration & checkpoint authority building. We had a special guest who joined us today, Ms S J, the cute daughter of Fang Tai who insisted on tagging along.

The Battle With Graves' Disease Part VIII : Life 1 Year After Surgery

After I have removed my mutated thyroid gland, I feel as if a curse has been lifted from my life. I feel somewhat more positive and many of the activities I have been working on seems to have also broken out from their curse of stagnation.

Although I have to be on hormone replacement therapy for the rest of my life, I was pretty happy with the state of things now.

A few months back, I watched a couple of zombie apocalypse shows and I wondered how long will I survive in the case that I am unable to get hold of my hormone replacement drugs after the world has been overrun by zombies.

Geylang River - The Gateway into Marina Bay (Highly Recommended)

Geylang River from Dakota MRT
It has been exactly 3 years since I started SG Unfit Runners and we are running into one of the biggest challenge of our blog: Finding an area in the central area which we have not covered yet and is acceptable by all the Unfit Runners who live all over Singapore. We spend sometime huddling over Google Map, enlarging the map, looking out for pathways or possible running routes which we can share with our readers. Working from the Marina Bay area, we spied a small walking track from Marina Bay East up along Geylang River. That route looks like a possible runner's dream with minimal traffic crossings. On top of that, one of the best food market in Singapore, Old Airport Road Market is along the way.

Singapore Chinatown Litter Race

Chinese New Year is around the corner again and Big Bone Guy suggested visiting Chinatown to take a look at this year's decorations. The fact is, we are more keen on the breakfast choices around Chinatown than the decorations, but it is as good as any excuse just to visit Chinatown for our morning run.

Lower Peirce Reservoir - Trails, Stairs and a Traffic Free Road (2.5km) (9km)

Beautiful cool morning at Lower Peirce Reservoir
The start of 2015 started with a Bang! A gunshot that heralds legions of work held back by the chains of the year end festival. It has been non-stop working week-days to week-ends for the first 2 weeks. The 3rd week of Jan me saw me down with a severe cold, thanks to over exhaustion and my running stamina is totally busted by a week of bed rest.
