Bordeaux, France - The Wine Capital of the World

11 October 2014

Between Paris and Bordeaux for the city to visit in France, I will pick Bordeaux anytime.

Paris is expensive, noisy and overcrowded, with half of it's population seemingly made up of tourists. I never got to appreciate what's the hype of Paris being one of the most romantic place in the world.

If you want to serenade a girl with good wine and food, romantic riverside walks with many kissable/huggable moments and country side drives with beautiful towns to explore, Bordeaux is definitely the place to be.

A Kiss The Girl moment at the reflecting pool at the Place de la Bourse
It is also a great place to run with so many options.

I took the easiest option for me to run along the River Garrone which offers kilometers of undisturbed run with a spectacular view of the city.

I set off from one of the busiest road in Bordeaux along the Cours Victor Hugo and at 730am in the morning, traffic is very light with few other pedestrians along the way. One of the biggest issue I have encountered while running in cities, especially those is Asia, is poorly maintained pedestrians pavement with ankle breaking potholes. Here at Bordeaux, the pavement is so smooth and well-paved, that even well maintained Singapore foot paths have to take a second seat.

Farewell Run on the Decommissioned East Coast Parkway Expressway #Throwback

Early Morning at ECP

Introduction
1 year ago, the new Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) took over East Coast Parkway (ECP) on the work of routing the traffic around the downtown area. There was a small stretch of time when there are absolutely no vehicles on the decommissioned expressway and there were no barricade barring the public from entering the disused expressway. I decided to post this run 1 year after the closure of ECP to prevent the word from getting out and attracting hordes of runners to do a farewell run on ECP. There are all those heavy vehicles and construction materials lying around which could pose as a risk for irresponsible and careless runners.

Why Companies Should NOT Spam Collaboration Invites to Bloggers

As most of my readers will know by now, I run 2 blogs:

SG Unfit Runners - A running blog where I share with my readers some of the cool short distance runs around Singapore and the World.

Xeolyenomics - An economics & gaming blog where I share with my readers some of the experiences I went through, as a money manager and as a game designer.

I have a fulfilling professional practice and business and have absolutely no need for sponsorships for my blogs. Neither do my unfit runners friends. They are successful professionals in their own industries.

However, as the readership for our blog grows, we started to receive media invites. This invite from Lazada tickled me so much that I decided to share with my readers, on why companies should not spam collaboration invites without doing sufficient research.

Wow, an invite from Lazada. Let's see what they can offer!

Wow, they rejected me because I have no readership (ranked 0/10), which is fine. However, why did they contact me in the first place?  The way this lady worded the reply is like lecturing a young kid and I should not have wrote in asking for sponsorship in the first place since I have nobody reading my blogs and will generate zero ROI for them...

5 Possible Motivations for Marathon Cheating and the Solutions

Running a marathon is often listed as one of the bucket list among many of my friends. Marathon is always associated as a revered sport, associated with strength, determination and perseverance. If you are a guy and you told people that you have completed a marathon, your social status immediately rockets and beautiful girls will flock to you and want you to share your experience. If you are a girl and you told people that you have completed a marathon, men will queue up to want to marry you.

The recent blog article by runningsucks.blogspot.sg created an uproar in various Singapore's social media circles, and the topic of cheating in a running event became a hot topic among the runners. The saga started by a passionate runner/blogger who was taking pictures of Singapore Marathon and noticed quite a number of runners wearing the slow runner's bib clearing the marathon within 4 hours (An extremely good timing by marathon standards). He checked the bib number against the official timing and found that some of the runners skipped some of the check-points, effectively reducing a 42km marathon to 25km. The blogger posted pictures and names of some of the suspected cheaters. The Singapore Marathon organizers later clarified that some of the slower runners were asked to turn back at the 13km mark as they have to reopen the roads closed by the event. The runners who were asked to turn back were still promised the coveted race medal and finisher T-shirt.

The big question now is that Singapore Marathon, being one of the Gold Label road race awarded by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), along with the most prestigious marathons in the world such as the Boston Marathon, is setting the right standard by forcing runners to take a shorter route and still awarding them the finisher rewards despite not completing the marathon. Is that the standard the organizers should set for a Gold Label marathon event? Should a qualifying timing be set just like the Boston marathon?

While the debate rages on in the running community, I took some time to take a look at some of the marathon cheating cases around the world and the motivation behind and possible solutions to deter marathon cheatings.

"I only want the T-shirt and Medal!"

Picture from Straits Times
Mr Tam Chua Puh created an uproar at the Singapore Stanchart Marathon when he emerged as the winner of the local category of Stanchart Marathon. He ran 6km, took some time to drink some coffee (I made that up, but what else to do while waiting for the race to end on an early Sunday morning?), and made a heroic dash to the end point. The tightly knit competitive Singapore marathon community was confused as to who this new-comer was and how he managed to beat the top marathon athletes in Singapore. The organizers took a few hours to verify the records before they disqualified Mr Tam. Mr Tam later made an apology and said:

Why Has Singapore Become a Pay-To-Run Nation?

Singaporeans must be really training hard to combat the potential rise of the transportation cost in Singapore.

With the price of ERP, COE, train fare, taxi fare, bus fare going up, the pragmatic Singaporeans are finding a potentially new way to save on their travel expenses, support a cause, get a nice running Tee and keeping fit at the same time.

They have been signing up for running events in doves.

Looking at the running calender, there seems to be a run every weekend and the traffic police in Singapore is getting very proficient in setting up road blocks and redirecting traffic as more and more of these running events pops up.

I often wonder why are there so many running events for an activity that is essentially free and why Singaporeans are so crazy about signing up for running events.

Perhaps it is due to social media that drives Singaporeans to sign up for these expensive running event. In fact, the more expensive it is, the faster the tickets are being snapped up.

Why social media makes a difference?

When I go on my normal run around Bedok Reservoir during my evening runs, take a selfie and post my run route on my facebook/instagram, I get 2 likes.. top...

No likes! Not even for my FCbarcelona Buff scarf

New Mizuno Wave hitting Kallang

by FangTaiTai (芳太

A Suave-looking President Kiyoshi Tatani elaborated on Mizuno's Strategy for South East Asia
South East Asia's first Mizuno Concept Store was officially launched by President Kiyoshi Tatani on 6 November at the Singapore's Kallang Wave Mall.  Aptly located near the Sports Hub, its opening represents Mizuno's strategy to woo sport enthusiasts with its new look, new shopping experience.

The SG Unfit runners received an invitation to attend their event at Kallang Wave Mall and even had the opportunity to test-run their Wave Rider 18 limited edition trainer (retail price at SGD 199)!
Opening of Mizuno South East Asia's first concept store featuring local Sport ambassadors.
The Wave Rider 18 Limited Edition, a sleek lightweight daily trainer, was introduced as Mizuno's best model yet from its Wave Rider legacy line. The limited edition colour ways are available only in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.

This model in particular has features for enhancing the running experience:
- Refined toe-spring for a smooth, effortless toe-off
- Upgraded premium sock liner that provides more rebound and resiliency at every foot strike
- New out-sole design with durability and shock attenuation

Check out their vibrant colours:
Rainbow hues exude vibrancy and precision
Ladies' cut in bright pink and rainbow-coloured sole
Men's version came in electric blue. Nice!
The shoes were such a eye-candy that everyone fought for the best angle to snap their pictures.
Now, I wondered if I would be receiving the bright pink ones for the test-run. In fact,I was tasked to run in those for the coming 10 km run at Great Eastern Women Run in 3 days.

Enough talk on shoes. (which lady could resist?) I'm supposed to get back to talking about the Concept Store itself.

Warm and comfortable feel of the Mizuno Concept Store at Kallang Wave Mall.
The Japanese authenticity was our key experience as we stepped into the store designed to reflect the quintessential Japanese elements of wood, handmade paper and traditional colours inspired by Kimono house. It brought about a sense of peace, warmth and comfort.
Origami display of a blue Crane in a Kimono house setting as its window display
Displayed trainers aside, the store actually featured a good selection of sports apparel suited for men and women. The feminine racer-back tops from the women selection came in bright pink and yellow, which really stood out from the racks. They seemed to be beckoning to me to grab them. Besides, the special opening discount of 40% provided the best excuse for executing another good buy!

You could even get yourself a pair of baseball gloves here too!
Mizuno showcases its cool range of baseball gloves~
After browsing through its range of products, I got pretty impressed. The designs are practical, sleek and their materials so breathable and soft.

So, no prize for guessing that I finally bought both the yellow and pink racer-back tops from the women series. Their prices are pretty decent after all!

Yet another selfie with slacker (Xeo). Happy as a bird after a good buy.
I was secretly exhilarated when I received the vibrant pink Wave Rider 18 limited edition trainer that matches with my pink racer-back top. Yay!

From 2015 onward, all concept stores as well as their shop in shops within the company region will aim to upgrade the shopping experience. Definitely looking forward to visit another Mizuno concept store in the near future!

Marina Bay Cruise Center - The Noah Ark of Singapore

Marina Bay Cruise Center. Has a Battleship feel to it.
Sg Unfit Runners have explored many places in Singapore but there is this infamous place at the Southern tip of the island which we haven't explored yet. And what is it infamous for? It's infamous for its 600m walkway from the newly opened Marina South Pier MRT station to the Marina Bay Cruise Center. So we decided to swing by Marina Bay Cruise center while starting from our usual starting point at the Helix Bridge.

Hello Kitty Run vs. Great Eastern Women Run

by Fang Tai Tai (芳太

Couples and frenzy fans waiting in anticipation

Hello Kitty Run: Rain Rain Go Away...

It was never my initial intention to join in the Hello Kitty Run (HKR) to celebrate the iconic kitty (girl or cat)'s 40th birthday on 1 November 2014. After all, my unfit runner gang of macho men does not belong to the department of cutesy affairs. They would rather run for SAFRA.

5 New Suggested Award Categories for Singapore Blog Awards 2015

It has been 3 months since Singapore Blog Awards 2014 and I have not posted anything on the event yet. I think almost every other Blogger who attended the event had already wrote their piece, and so I better get my ass to work...

Firstly, I will like to thank the judges to think so highly of SG Unfit Runners despite our unpopularity (39 likes on facebook). With our backgrounds in engineering, accounting and banking, going for a media award was a total novelty to us. The first thing we fret about was "What to Wear?"

Lisbon, Portugual - Atlantic Coastal Run at the Oldest City in Europe

Praça do Comércio (Commerce Sq). Surrounded by government custom and naval offices

Bull fights, Ronaldo, Booze, Red Meat and a total lack of motivation to run at Madrid made the unfit runners, totally not prepared to take on the hilly slopes of Lisbon. Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is one of the oldest cities in the world. Another nick name for Lisbon is "City of 7 Hills".

We had a sense of forbidding when we had to challenge the steep stairwells of Lisbon, along with our 10KG luggage (pretty light by any standards!) to our apartment in the old district of Alfama . Our arms were dead tired by the time we collapsed at our apartment and we decided to take a few hours nap in order to recover from our hill-climbing-with-luggage ordeal.

Madrid Spain - Sorry, We rather Eat than Run in Madrid!

Puerta del Sol - The Heart of Madrid @ 1am
Rather than go for an evening run at Madrid, we decided to go for a leisurely evening walk instead.

Why?

Madrid is simply crazy when it comes to weekends. The streets are literally full of people and everybody are partying till 5am in the morning. On top of that, our hotel is right in the commercial heart of Madrid at Puerta del Sol . So rather than trying to jog through the thick evening pedestrian traffic, we swapped our running shoes for walking shoes instead.

Granada, Spain - A Vibrant Historical Southern City Which We feel like Immigrating to

Spain, Granada: The Tomb of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II
The ancient Moorish city of Granada, home to 3 UNSECO world heritage sites: The Alhambra, The General Life and the historical district of Albayzín. When I planned our itinerary to Granada, I imagined it to be a small city, with narrow winding  roads and charming buildings. There are no direct connecting train or plane routes to Madrid, making it a not so accessible city. The best way in and out of the city is by bus or by car.  I was impressed by the broad straight roads, the bustling shopping & diners and lots of young energetic university students. We were surprised by the amount of young people at Granada as most of historic tourist cities are made up of mostly elderly tourists and bored folks running the souveniers and eating establishments.

Cordoba Spain - The Cultural City with the Largest UNSECO Urban Area in the World

Cordoba, Spain

At Barcelona, Big Boned Guy (BBG) came down with a bout of stomach viral attack. He was quite miserable for 3 days.

A few days later, I was infected with the same virus, resulting in non stop diarrhea and stomach cramps. As BBG and Alcoholic set off for their early morning run at Cordoba, I had to roll around on the bed moaning in pain, wishing for the cramps to go away.

Seville, Spain - Running Along River Guadalquivir

End of the run. Take a while to enjoy the morning
This is the time of the year for Unfit Runners annual getaway trip. This year, we are going off to Spain, along with Alcoholic and Big Bone Guy (BBG)

We touch down at Barcelona and spent 4 days tapas hopping, visiting Gudi's buildings and bumming around in general. Big Bone Guy came down with a bout of food poisoning and we had to cancel our run at Barcelona. But not to worry, we will end our trip at the beach-side city of Barcelona and should be able to clock in a run or two before leaving for Singapore.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Desa Park City: Clean & Green & Safe

Desa Park City: The Lake View
It has been one month since my running ban and allow some VIP treatment for my knee to recover. Do I miss running? Honestly YES. However, to prevent aggravating my injuries, I have decided to do some brisk walking in order to keep my morale up. I spend the week over at Malaysia Kuala Lumpur this week to prepare for the upcoming launch of my card game Wongamania. You can find more details here.

The Outpatient Bills of Post Thyroid Surgery

I just went to visit my surgeon again for a post operation check-up. Turns out that my thyroid hormone levels are on the low side again. I now have to consumer 100mg of thyroxine hormone pills from Monday to Thursday and 125 mg on Friday to Sunday. I hope that I do not confuse the medication again.

Oh, did I mention that I confused my medication and ate two 25mg tablets for 3 weeks before I realize my mistake during April? No wonder my hormone levels are so screw up. It doesn't help that I am losing hair much faster than usual thanks to the hormone imbalance. My fashion consultants are contemplating whether to advice me to shave off my hair or not...

Meanwhile, the hospital bill for this short 4 hours visit cost me $200.

Ouch!

And I cannot claim insurance this time round as it is out of the 3 months pre and post surgery outpatient claims as dictated by the insurance contract.

5 Top Waterfront Running Spots in Singapore ... for Unfit Runners

When it comes to running beside a body of water, there is no shortfall of running spots in Singapore. From the coastal runs of East Coast Parkway and Punggol Promenade, to the reservoir runs at MacRitchie and Pierce Reservoir.

As Unfit Runners, we look out for short 3km-5km distance runs, with nearby food amenities which allows us to feast on food which we normally avoid, using the runs as a pretext. The start and end point should preferably be near a MRT station, as those with knee injuries can take a train back to the breakfast point rather than running back. Without further ado, here are top 5 most scenic waterfront running spots in Singapore.

1. Keppel Bay - Labrador Park

This route allows us a glimpse of the wealthy lifestyle of some of the top income earners in Singapore. Yachts floating gently in Keppel bay; A luxury waterfront apartment complex designed by one of the most famous architect in the world; A park seeped with the colonial history of Singapore. There is always something to discover around here. If you need any motivation to become rich and successful in Singapore, here is the perfect running route!

Distance: 5 km

Nearest MRT: Harbourfront MRT. Labrador Park MRT

Nearest Food: Seah Imm Food Center, Vivocity

I am sure many of us won't mind owning one of these babies!

How to Fix a Broken Shoulder Part 3: Recovery

By Slacker | Guest Writer

Previously on How to Fix a Broken Shoulder...

"Throughout my visits to TTSH and Dr Lim, Iwas visiting the Sinseh regularly every fortnight. He would use medicine, acupuncture with heat, cupping & evenletting of blood to aid my recovery & sore muscles. There were times wherehe would put some secret Shaolin formula on my shoulder, wrap it up & toldme to leave it there for 3 days. Given the bucket loads that I sweat, I could feel the itch already..."

How to Fix a Broken Shoulder Part 2: Diagnosis & Treatment

By Slacker | Guest Writer

Previously on How to Fix a Broken Shoulder .....

"To my surprise, the big pain never came & I was still able to use my right hand for light tasks. Off to TTSH (Tan Tock Seng Hospital) I went but not before a bath & lunch as the wait will be way too long I'm sure. It didn't feel too bad but changing of clothes was a real wake up call if you know what I meanGiven the symptoms & my prior experience, I remember thinking that I should be back in no time but unbeknownst to me then, this split second has changed my way of life forever.."

The A&E nurses & doc were somewhat surprised at how calm & matter of fact I was (thanks to my prior experience which calls for another article). I guessed that's why she only offered pain killers (which I declined), 1 day MC & told me to reuse my old arm sling (if I can find it, it was a good 9 years back after all)!

I took it as a sign that all will be back to normal in no time. The swelling went down pretty fast & the pain & soreness were pretty much gone by the 3rd day. I found my old slings & used it primarily when commuting, just in case I get bumped by Singaporeans who are walking blindly, engrossed with their mobile devices.

On the 2nd day, I was back to work & my boss tapped on my injured shoulder hard a few times, thinking that it would be a harmless joke. I was really HIGH and I could probably hit some Celine Dion high notes. He was probably unaware how bad my injury was as I removed my sling once I reached office.

Morale of the story: Wear your sling, made sure every Tom, Dick & Harry knows about your injury.

I later did some googling, compared the illustrations to my x-rays and concluded that the injury looks like a Type-III AC joint disruption. Generally, surgery is not performed as studies have shown that the recovery is about the same whether surgery is prescribed or not. Some people have also commented in the forums that a complete tear is less painful than a partial tear down the road as there is less contact between the bones. Wonder if I should feel happy or not, hmm...

How to Fix a Broken Shoulder: Irresistible Force vs. Immovable Object

by Slacker | Guest Writer

First some self introduction, I’m very laid back & lazy as most people are (I guess), thus calling myself Slacker as a reminder to keep on moving my lazy bum. Training Muay Thai & Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) up to 6 days a week & Mountain Biking with my buddy to round off the week, it’s been my way of life since I can remember & I’m loving it..

As Newton has said – an object in motion tends to stay in motion. And so I am, in my mid 30s, active, happy, healthy & fit as a fiddle. But stop it did, on the 4th May 2014 as irresistible force met immovable object!

VIP Threatment for Knee: Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Chien Chi Tow (拳器道) People's Park Center
Looks like my running hobby might be temporarily suspended for now.

This knee issue has been troubling me for months, and I never really got down to investigate the root of the problem. I was running on and off during the past few months and as my knee slowly healed, I managed to increase my distance from a paltry 1 km to 4km before I feel any pain. 2 weeks ago, as I was exploring the newly launched Sports Hub, I felt a sharp pain and the pain persisted for the next few days. At that point of time, I realize that I need to seek help.

10 Reasons Why You Should Vote For Us - Singapore Blog Awards 2014

Do you know how hard is it to get a 30+ year old Singaporean to go for a jog? They have to juggle between a 60 hours workweek, threats of retrenchments, a crushing mortgage, a couple of terrible twos/threes kids, in-laws, laundry and a consistently growing beer belly? The blog was created to inspire fellow busy Singaporeans to strap on their shoes and go for a run! To a marathon runner, 3km-5km may be considered a fun run, but for the majority of the Unfit Runners, clearing 5km is already a great achievement. So if you are still unsure if that is a good enough cause, here are 10 other reasons why you should vote for us!

Reason 1: IPPT is coming and you hope that you can find a nice training spot near your area to jog

After getting into the Finals of Singapore Blog Awards 2014, I decided to look into some of my older posts and wipe the dust off them. Now that I have put a number in front of the title, I hope that this post will go viral...

Finalist of Singapore Blog Awards 2014! - SG Unfit Runners Upcoming Epic Saturday Run!

PES E, "Hey guys! Guess what! SG Unfit Runners is the finalist for Singapore Blog Awards!"

Fang Tai, "Okie. So where are we running this week?" (Totally unexcited)

BBG, "No run for me since I am catching both the World Cup match for tonight" (Has a World Cup betting pool with his colleagues. Don't blame him)

Lazy Girl, "I won't run tomorrow. Just got vaccine and need to stay at home." (So old still need vaccine?! Going Africa?!?)

PES E, "Er. Okie. My knee is still hurting from last week run. I think I will skip this week also." (Author himself giving excuses of knee injury! Shameless!)

Thus the SG Unfit Runners decided to forgo their celebratory run and concentrate on drinking beer, watching World Xup and nursing an injured knee.

Singapore Sports Hub - The Old Dame transformed into a Curvey Lady (1km)

Singapore Sports Hub and the Singapore Indoor stadium
I have many memories of the old Kallang National Stadium and attending the National Day Parade, belting out classical Singapore National Day Songs like "Stand Up for Singapore", "We are Singapore", "One People, One Nation, One Singapore" and my personal favorite, "Count on me Singapore".

Fang Tai," Hey Guys, let's try Sentosa for our run this week. I have a family day later at Sentosa, so that will be perfect."

Big Bone Guy (BBG), "Sure. Let us start from Vivo city, run to Sentosa via the boardwalk. We haven't tried exploring the North side of Sentosa yet!"

PES E," There is no World Cup match tonight?"

BBG, "There's the Italy game but I am not too interested. Anyway I am on my third pint of beer now. Tomorrow confirm die."

Bright Hill Monastery (光明山普觉禅寺) - A Run to the Most Important Buddhist Temple of Singapore (5KM)

When Big Bone Guy (BBG) suggested running around the housing estates of Upper Thomson and Marymount Road, I was expecting the usual boring private housing, condo and public housing (HDB) landscape that makes up the majority of the housing estate in Singapore. He sparked my curiosity when he mentioned the Bright Hill Monastery or better known as 光明山 among the Buddhists in Singapore.

Bugis - Into The Cultural Melting Pot of Singapore

The Morning Sun over some of the oldest HDB (public housing) in Singapore @ Bugis
Today, the gang gathered at Plaza Sing again. For some reasons, we kept coming back here week after week. In any case, it's time to be creative on where to run!

That is one stretch which I have not attempted before. It is the direction towards Selegie, Little India and Bugis. That should be one interesting run!

Marina at Keppel Bay - Wet Wet Wet!

Today, the run was pretty disgusting...

We started off from Harbourfront, doing our usual Labrador Park route, when it started to pour 10 mins into the run. I was stuck at the marina, with almost no shelter anyway near, short of trespassing the gates of some very expensive private properties. I can only stand at a very very small ledge, while the rain just pours and pours.

The ultra thin shelter I had
Nothing to do while waiting for the rain to stop. Pictures time!
After 10 mins of waiting, I gave up waiting and made a mad dash back to Seah Imm Market. I was getting wet anyway and the tiny ledge was not much protection against the wind and the rain.  I was praying that my iPhone will not get soaked after I tucked it into the deepest recess of my pocket, surrounded by cotton. I managed to get to the market within 5 mins, with my iPhone still alive. Thank God!

However, Big Bone Guy and Lazy Girl are no where to be seen.

Lazy Girl strolled in 15 mins later. She claimed that she was stuck at a bus stop and had to take a bus to the nearby Labrador MRT and take the MRT back. Smart of her to bring along her transport card!

Meanwhile, BBG stumbled in 10 mins later, totally drenched. It seems like he is hardcore enough to run in the pouring tropical rain.

His ear piece did not survive the trip. RIP.

We started to spread our wet bandana, socks and various stuff all around the tables and chairs at Seah Imm Food Center to dry, and pretend that nobody noticed us.

Seriously, it is better to lose some public image than to go home in wet socks!
